Lesson Assignment: Submit Your Draft Capability Statement
Introduction: The "5-Second Trash Test"
When a general contractor (GC) or a state agency is looking for subcontractors, their estimators do not have time to read 10-page brochures. They perform what is called the 5-Second Trash Test.
Estimators scan your marketing materials for five seconds. If they cannot immediately find your core codes, certifications, and capacity limits, your document goes into the recycling bin.
Your Capability Statement is a single-sheet (double-sided is acceptable, but one-sided is preferred) document that acts as your business's resume. It is not designed to sell your services to homeowners; it is designed to prove to a prime contractor's prequalification department that your business has the structural maturity to work on their job site.
